the best meal ive ever had in my life!!! no question. ive never had Somali food, but after reading a review that said this is the best Somali food in the DMV i had to try. i road a scooter 4.6 miles for this meal! NO REGRETS!!! i would actually die for this meal, thank God i dont have to so i can eat it over & over again.
i got the lamb & fish with rice & stew (?) tbh idk what the stew was but i dont need to know because it brought the entire meal together. that and the hot sauce. i took an extra meal to-go for lunch the next day, but honestly i may go back again because i feel like i didnt tip well enough for how much i enjoyed this meal. i literally cleared the plate. nothing but bones left!!!!
the woman who took my order & served me was so pleasant and kind. thank you to her .
i could not properly describe the extent to which this meal healed me. i dont know what more to say, yet i have so much to say.
We had a great experience here trying Somalian food for the first time! Our entries came with a simple Italian salad (nothing to write home about) but also included a free drink. We chose the tea, which was sweet and had plenty of Somalian spices. The fish sandwich was simple but very tasty. The spaghetti and chicken steak came with a spicy sauce, and was surprisingly tasty. The main highlight for me was my sabayad (a Somali bread that reminded me of Indian roti) with chicken saqar. There was plenty of chicken covered in a nice blend of onions, pepper, and spices with enough juice to dip the bread in. It almost reminded me of fajitas. Everything was delicious, and the customer service was great as well. The staff came over to ask about the food and answer our questions. We would definitely come back!
Gonna start with the good stuff – food was great, menu simple yet effective, and honestly for that alone Id come back. The reviews here dont lie in regard to that. Price wise this location is very reasonable.
Downsides – service was a bit slow at the time, though our server (a lady who ran the front counter) was quite nice. Theres also a cleanliness issue imo – saw some bugs in the dining area and I know many people can get uncomfortable from that. If that could be fixed this place would be great and a solid 5/5.
The food was amazing, I got lamb and fish with rice. Both the lamb and the fish were cooked and seasoned very well. It was my first time trying this type of cuisine and I was not disappointed! The reason I docked a star was due to the dine in atmosphere which was not to my taste. This should not deter you to get some delicious food from here as the food itself was great!
I had their chicken sandwich. It was tasty and had a nice flavor.
My dining experience at Kulan Cafe was so worth the experience. Their lamb and rice was so delicious, as well as their pasta and chicken steak. I felt that the food that they made was authentic as if you were visiting a Somali household for dinner. They also have a woman-only dining section for those who do not want to dine with men around, and that made me feel comfortable. The service is nice, and apologized for the slight delay with their food, but it came out in a reasonable amount of time.
Overall, I highly recommend stopping by Kulan Cafe for an authentic Somali dining experience. I hope to come back here again, even if it is far out of a drive.
Get take out rather than dine in if you want more portion. Food is spectacular. Recommend lamb with rice. Dont forget the potato sauce. Always comes with a drink and banana
I was looking for Somalian food as I heard from my sister about it. I loved it. Each and every item was so delicious. Perfect Somalian authentic cuisine. I will come again for the rice and lamb. Everyone working in the restaurant is so kind. They are very generous with quantity of food. Dont judge the book by its cover. The restaurant look and atmosphere is not good but do not miss thew delicious food for that reason. If you prefer fancy restaurant, then go for take out.
