About
Our community primarily known as Nigeria Muslim Council has been in existence as the Africa American Community Center for over a half of a century. Its origin stemmed from some Nigerians that came to the United States for their college and graduate school programs and decided to stay back in Washington Metropolis to build careers, develop businesses and raise families after successfully completing their studies. The need for networking, socialization, cultural development and religious fellowship inevitably led to the establishment of the Brentwood Islamic Center. Our community has systematically moved from a social/cultural focus to a full Islamic community.
The second generation of Nigerian-Americans has come of age. In ensuring that we duly attend to the needs of all age groups in the community, we have developed programs customized for different groups. Consequently, our masjid is now being utilized as a multipurpose community center; Arabic and Islamic school for kids and adults; professional networking center for the working class; rejuvenating center for grandparents and a meeting center for all groups and associations.
Our Mission
Our mission is to develop the framework for addressing issues affecting local Muslim people through effective partnership working and the promotion of unity and harmony, tolerance and respect amongst the residents of Brentwood. We will strive to consult, contribute, help develop and where needed deliver excellent services which meet the needs of the communities residing in Brentwood, by providing a gateway to service providers, enhancing access and participation and developing not only Nigerian Muslims Community in the U.S.A but, all the Muslim communities. The goals of the NMC is to foster the ability of Nigerians in sharing their problems and difficulties with fellow Muslim brothers and sisters as recommended in the Holy Quran, taught by our Holy Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him).
