The Halal Guys have been around for years, and if you’re a New Yorker, you know all about street meat, especially chicken over rice. They’ve won many Food Network foodie awards, and back in the day when I lived in NY, this was the ultimate late night meal after a long night of clubbing.
Their most famous location at 53rd St. and 6th Ave., right in front of the Hilton Hotel, had lines wrapped around the block for hours, all night long. It’s pure nostalgia for NYC nightlife.
When I moved to Florida and found out there was a location nearby, I had to check it out. My go to order is always a mix over rice with extra white and hot sauce. I’ve visited the restaurant a few times, but on this particular day, I decided to DoorDash. The food arrived hot, and this time, I went for just chicken over rice, still loaded with white and hot sauce. The flavors were spot on, the rice was well seasoned, and the chicken was moist and packed with flavor. I also tried the baklava cheesecake and hibiscus lemonade, both great choices, but the real star here is the chicken over rice platter.
This will always be my go to after a long night (especially one with plenty of drinks). It’s simply a must and brings back all my NYC memories!
We got 6 meals to go and so ended up being served by 2 servers. One was quiet and not particularly helpful when we said that we were taking a while to look at the menu since it was our first time there. They were playing music relatively loudly and the acoustics in the small location are horrible, so it was a bit hard to hear when we were speaking with the servers.
The falafel was fried fresh to order and was ready quickly.
The side of hummus was generous (about 6oz), but only came with one small pita bread (which we didnt realize until we got home). It was not particularly flavorful, as I am used to a hint of lime/spice. It was improved by the red sauce they offer.
The chocolate baklava cheesecake was ok. Not very chocolatey and it only had a top crust of baklava, so it didnt evoke any of the classic baklava flavors either.
The plates were pretty much all the same (except for the toppings in each). The lettuce and tomatoes were fresh. They dont have any dressing or seasonings on it so if you like that, then you should add some of their white sauce. The chicken had a nice outer texture from the grill and was juicy but pretty flavorless. For a middle eastern restaurant, I expected some sumac or Zaatar or 7 spice – not just salt and pepper. The toppings are nothing special – raw onions, green bell peppers, jarred jalapeo, or briney chopped olives.
It wasnt bad, but nothing special enough to return to.
NO WHITE SAUCE AND HARD PITA Not as good as the original by any imagination… it you don’t have the sauce on hand you compromise extra meat ….rice free drink but that was pretty horrible…
Everything is great Firuz and other personal so kind and respectful thank you guys
The food was delicious and I enjoyed my meal. I did notice something that could be improved in terms of hygiene. The server, who was already wearing gloves while serving, removed one glove to handle payment, placed it on the counter, then put it back on. She later cleaned tables while wearing the same gloves used for serving food. A quick glove change between tasks could make the experience feel even more sanitary.
